SUMMARY:Introduction to Public Libraries: Part I: The Historical Development of Public Libraries
DESCRIPTION:When did the idea of public library service first emerge\, and
what should that service ideally look like? The roots of today’s free
public libraries stretch deep into history—back to the earliest written
records and the ancient institutions that preserved them. “The Historical
Development of Public Libraries” traces this long arc\, exploring
influential libraries across different eras and cultures that embodied
early versions of the values we now associate with public
librarianship.\n\nOur journey moves from the famed Library of Alexandria\,
to the commercial subscription libraries of the 19th century that helped
shape modern public access\, and onward to 20th‑century libraries whose
successes and failures reveal how the mission evolved. By the end\, we gain
a broad understanding of how public libraries and their services have
 grown\, adapted\, and expanded—ultimately becoming the
community‑centered institutions we recognize today.\n\nPresenter: Ben
 Kolbe\, Librarian\, Teen Center\, Enoch Pratt Free Library/SLRC\n\nLearning
